The rainy-day media night kit

Ketchikan is one of the rainiest towns in the country. Here is how we turn a soggy Saturday into the best night of the week.

Ketchikan gets well over 100 inches of rain in a typical year, so a wet Saturday isn't a reason to cancel plans. It is the plan. Over the years the shop crew has settled on a simple kit for a proper media night in, and it works just as well in Phoenix as it does on the waterfront.

1. Get warm first

A damp house feels colder than the thermostat says. A small ceramic heater takes the chill off the living room in minutes, and a weighted blanket keeps you on the couch through the second episode.

2. Queue up the lineup

Pick the shows before anyone gets comfortable. A Netflix gift card is our favorite low-effort present for the friend who always hosts, and it arrives by email even if the weather grounds the floatplanes.

3. Clean up the gear

Dust on the TV vents and crumbs in the keyboard build up fast in a house where everyone is home. A rechargeable air duster sorts it out without buying cans of compressed air every month.

4. Call it a night properly

Lights down, phone away, a pillow that supports your neck. The rain will still be there in the morning.
